An historic cross grid party took place recently in Second Life and on OSGrid. The event was spearheaded by Cursa Charisma of Nexus Roleplay and co-sponsored by Majorie Dibou of Black Soul Rhythms Radio, Lanai Jarrico of SLEnquirer, Lani Global of Lani Global Region/OSGrid, and JJ Zackerly of OSGrid .
So what was it all about? Its been about two and one-half years since Linden Labs announced they had successfully teleported an avatar from SL to a virtual world built on open source technology. Back then, when the avatar teleported, it ended up in the new place as “Ruth.” For most SL residents that event has faded in memory and the open source versions of SL did not come up much in discussion. But work has continued on the open source project. Today there are thousands of grids, with a few distinguishing themselves in terms of organization and consistent development. Teleporting between grids in OpenSim, can now be done with hypergrid, allowing avatars to go from one grid to another seamlessly, although SL remains walled off from that process. Over the past year, price increases in SL motivated more people, particularly those in educational and non-profit environments to check out OpenSim grids, mostly through the grid known as OSGrid, which currently is the largest of the OpenSim grids. Others of note are InworldZ and Aniworlds. OSGrid just celebrated its 4th birthday with a grid wide weekend celebration.

Since the last time this site was updated a number of operator of Second Life residents have passed away in real life. See the Farewell column below. Their passings rekindled a question I was pondering for a while. Today, many people have on-line identities through Facebook, Twitter, blogs, email accounts , game accounts, and other digital content. What should happen with those identities when the real life operator dies? Have you thought about that? Would you want your loved one to have access to any of your on-line identities, a few of them or none at all?
Most of us have not thought about this issue and for the most part, with the exception of Yahoo!, ISP providers have made no explicit provisions for death of the real life operator. Probably the underlying assumption originally was that upon death the account would terminate. The various ToS and EULA agreements however, do not specifically say that. And what if your SL avatar is producing net income (yes...naysayers, there are still some SL residents that run businesses in the black) which your family benefits from? Should your family be able to continue to enjoy the financial benefit of your creative work?
These questions would have seemed silly ten years ago, but today these are valid concerns which all of us who have on-line identities should think seriously about. As strange as it sounds, it may be time for people to start including their on-line identities and assets in their wills!

In the past few months, these members of the SL Communities of color have passed away:
Kevinblue Oh – Many of you may recognize Kevinblue's name. He was one of the many talented live music artists of Second Life. He was a musician of note in real life and just a fascinating person. Please read all about him. A memorial service for him was sponsored by Indea Vaher.
Yap Barth – Yap was a friend of mine from way back. A nicer person you could not hope to meet. Yap had a loving family in SL as well as in RL. He is missed by his SL sisters, Choyce Mostel, ChocolateKiss, SucculentChocolate and Shani SUgar. Yap passed after a struggle with cancer. A memorial was held for him in SL and I am told that his real life spouse came in-world to attend the ceremony and to honor her husband's virtual existence. We will all miss Yap.
